Surtr
The Fiery Demise
None enter the fiery mountains of Muspellheim without meeting certain death beneath the flames of Surtr’s blade, Eldurstál. Surtr is the only Titan whom Odin could not truly defeat for the power Surtr held over his domain was immeasurable. Odin could only keep Surtr contained within his world, Muspellheim, and guard against the Fire Jotunn that lay within. Surtr was born amidst fire and smoke in the explosion that created Yggdrasil and has guarded the frontiers of Muspellheim since then. He is destined to split the heavens open and release the sons of Muspell upon the Nine Worlds, lighting the worlds like a furnace with his Scathe of Branches.
Surtr has the basic power of manipulating the flames of the Fire World, Muspellheim. These are the flames that existed before existence during the time of Ginnungagap where it was only two worlds, Muspellheim and Niflheim, the world of ice. These are flames that sparked the beginning of life and created Yggdrasil. The flames of Muspellheim cannot be put out seeing as they have always existed, so the moment they burn...they truly burn forever even without a medium such as air. It does not need anything to burn like regular fire, therefore it’s not weak to any amount of power from water attacks. The only thing it is weak to is the cold winds of Niflheim. It also cannot burn Hodmimir’s Forest.

Summoning Surtr will cause the very air to burn with intense heat. It will be as if there was fire everywhere, but no flame, simply the scalding heat.
“Southern wind face north, your calling has come to burn the world to ash...Appear from beyond the burning hot waves! ROAR, TITAN OF FIRE, SURTR!”
Stage 1-Eldurstál (Fire Steel)
From within the earth (it’s actually winds rising from Muspellheim), smoldering winds will converge into your hand until they combust in a flurry of flames, forming the burning sword, Eldurstál. The blade is covered completely in black soot (soot is incomplete burned matter, key word: incomplete), with a faint red glow emanating within the blade. They say the soot on the blade is a collection of everything the flames of Muspellheim has burned from before existence to throughout existence (this is actually true). Eldurstál summons no flames in this stage, but whatever it hits is turned into black soot which covers the blade even more. Each swing shoots out the particles of the soot, agitating the atmosphere and air around you, causing sparks to flare everywhere, and the air to burn even more intensely. Meaning, each swing causes damage to the opponent even if you don’t hit them.
- Eldur dýrið öskra (Fire Beast Roar): A technique where you release a wave of the black soot toward your opponent (horizontally, diagonally, vertically, etc). The release is like rushing black earth blasting into the opponent, immediately reducing them to stone where they’ll reduce to the same state as the sword, covered in black soot with a faint red glow within. The technique burns everything within them and reduces their existence to mimic that of Eldurstál. The pure release of the wave causes the air to bend against the onslaught which, depending on how much power you put into it, could cause the wave of soot to combust into the flames of Muspellheim prematurely, so the opponent would be reduced to ash just as the flames begin to reach them. The soot itself can’t be blocked by normal means seeing as anything that hits it is devoured and turned into soot. It can only be frozen, dodged, or something powerful takes the brunt of it.
- Brenndiheim (Burned World): Manipulating the black soot already in the air to various effects already seen basically.
Stage 2 - Scathe of Branches
“Surtr ferr sunnan með sviga lævi: skinn af sverði sól valtiva”
“Surtr moves from the south with the scathe of branches: there shines from his sword the sun of the Gods of the slain”
Eldurstál will erupt in a violent torrent of flames, the black soot exploding out and covering your entire body in it, shielding you from the flames for without them, you’d burn. The ferocious red flames will spread throughout the land and cause a chain reaction across the sky as flames erupt in chains, each explosion causing another explosion in the air. The rushing onslaught of heat and energy would vaporize the opponent if they’re not in a heightened state. The explosions will stop after they reach the horizon, the land reduced to ash. In your grasp, the Scathe of Branches will shake, a blood red color reduced in the sky. The effect resembles that of Ragnarok in its Fate of the Gods stage, where all bonds are broken. Your own limitations are burned away, increasing all of your physical capabilities past anyone else’s. This is also a threat if you do not know your limits, because the aftereffects will crush you.
|
Eldurstál now burns bright in your grasp, the blade’s light blinding even the sun. The effects of the fire are already explained. In this state, you can manipulate the black soot on your body. Since the explosions burned everything across the expanse, the soot is further charged and serves like armor. The flames themselves can be worn like an aura or cloak.

- Sudurvindur-Hefnd (Southern Wind-Vengeance): Charging the Bright Sword, causing the flames across the expanse to be breathed in by the blade. An ominous red glow befalling the battlefield, Yggdrasil trembling, the air groaning. Then you spike the sword into the earth, causing the battlefield to split, the flames of the South to blast like pillars deep into the sky by the thousands, striking Asgard (it appearing as if the stars were falling). The pillars would remain, being as thick as city blocks. The heat itself would be enough to destroy both the opponent and any other effects.
- Sudurvindur-Vegsemd (Southern Wind-Glory): You rise into the sky, sword burning bright as your body empowers with the flames. The falling stars in the sky would switch direction towards the earth and fall down with you like comets as your body charges from above, like lightning hitting the earth. The sheer explosion would destroy the pillars and cause the ground all throughout to be littered in flames, giving it the impression of red burning grass across the plains. The force is enough to destroy almost any structure.
Stage 3 - Raze the Worlds
“The sons of Muspell rode from the south, the Black swinging his sword and bringing the inferno upon the battlefield.”
The earth is torn open, lava gushing out from the ground, creating an ocean of fire beyond the horizon. The heavens a black curtain, only a red comet approaching from the south. Eldurstal extends out into a greatsword, the flames growing larger and more wild as the comet looms closer. Flames expel from within your skin as you begin to transform into the mighty flames of Muspell.
This stage is focused heavily on ranged attacks where you throw fire or animate fire throughout the entire battlefield. If your opponent were to get close, they’d melt before you and face the giant cleaver in your hands since you still maintain the great strength and agility from the previous stages. Your flames are more wild and erratic due to the conversion, making them all the more deadly, but perhaps this is the weakest stage because you are at your deadliest. In order to defeat you in this stage, they’d need to be able to contain the flames and let them consume you because those flames you’re releasing are the ones you cannot contain. |
- Sudurvindur: Satt Helvíti Logi Vegsemd (True Hell Blaze Glory): Tucking your stomach in and applying pressure all throughout your lower body, you blast into the air, twisting like a drill into the sky. The flames, as you ascend, spiral around you like a flaming tornado, lashing out against anything that gets close. The burning winds would whip across the fields, melting anything it strikes whilst the ground vaporizes away at the passage of the tornado. You can continue to spin inside the middle of the tornado, adding more velocity, or stop when you want. The tornado can be manipulated and its rotation flux altered to give the appearance of arms extending out seeing as its size is tremendous.
- Láttu Himinn Sjóða (Let the Sky Boil): This technique is only possible if you maintain the technique prior and raise the flames into the sky, turning them into cindering clouds that expand throughout the battlefield. This is similar to the prior technique, except now you eject them down into smaller versions, their bodies fed by the smoldering heat and smothering winds present all throughout. They fall down in a turbulent whirlwind of flames, burning away the ground and digging deep into the mantle. The opponent will become caught between the gyrating funnels even if they dodge their fall, leaving them in a worse state. The winds and heat would burn them away as heat energy rises continuously with the growing spin of the vortexes. They would not be able to summon any attacks as it is melted away as it forms within their body. After a while, the constant rotation would create an explosion between all vortexes, consuming everything beneath the clouds in an unimaginably powerful explosion that would rip apart the heavens above and tear off the crust in a vehement discharge, giving way to the fire giant to crash down.
Stage 4 - Destroyer of the Nine
“There came the first Son of Muspell, carrying the Scathe of Branches; prepared to wage war against gods and men alike, whose flames burned heaven and earth.”
Surtr plummets down into the fields like a meteor and it is a spectacular sight. The opponent, if they managed to survive all techniques, would have to survive the arrival of Surtr right at the beginning of this stage. When Surtr lands, waves of flames are released outward as a massive wall that raise deep into the sky, travelling at great speeds and expanding all throughout the earth. All life and any AoE techniques would be burned away in the immediate arrival of Surtr. The Fire Giant would rise up from the inferno at his wake, standing above lava exposed from the skin of the earth and towering over the battlefield, being seen from every corner of it. When the Fire Giant arrives, the flames would consume you and empower Eldurstal, who would convert you into Surtr’s sword to be wielded by Surtr himself.
Surtr carries no armor in his upper body, his body black with cracks of molten liquid visible within, cinders expelling out of his body with each breath. His beard a charged flame reminiscent of the radiance of the sun, while his eyes remain obsidian. His lower body possess the scales of a dragon, crimson in color. In his wake, a groaning sound echoes throughout the worlds reminiscent of a melancholic choir; it is the sound of a bleeding Yggdrasil. Surtr’s very presence melts away defenses as only offensive attacks are capable of standing against him, a swing of his sword hitting any point of the earth he wishes.

- Múspell: Ásmorðingi (Godkiller): Eldurstal charges up, its flames flaring and glowing with an ominous red radiance. Slashing Eldurstal out, a burning red line emerges from anything it cuts. A second later, the object would explode in a maelstrom of flames that stretch across the entire size of whatever it cuts, the flames spreading out wildly after it consumes the object, whether it be mountain, moon, planet, person, or World. The technique is capable of cutting down each of the Nine Worlds and any god or being of greater power. The technique is charged and can allow for a total of 9 cuts.
- Múspell: Thanemorðingi (Lordkiller): Eldurstal charges up again, this time dispensing throughout the body of Surtr and empowering him with flaming armor. Eldurstal becomes sheathed in a scabbard of black soot, red energy breathing out from cracks, allowing for the weapon to be used in a blunt manner for crushing capabilities. The technique is meant to be to plunge continents and worlds back into the seas as it shakes the very foundations of the world. It can be used as many times as it takes as long as the black soot doesn’t crack open to reveal an angry Eldurstal.
- Andast Af (Die): Thrusting Eldurstal outward, Surtr releases a flurry of flames that chase the opponent down viciously. The flames are focused and purge what is in its path, leaving nothing but soot if it kills the opponent.
Stage 5 - March of Ginnungagap's Son
“See him rise from a world aflame, his fury unleashed. Perdition awaits everyone, the world will die in flames. An eternal twilight shall follow, broken only by the rise of the Lord. To this end, fate has made it true.”
It is important to note that this stage will end in your death just as much as the death of your opponent. The sound of the Gjallarhorn will ring for the final time and will destroy Surtr, his body consumed by flames. Only his sword, Eldurstal, will remain...where your soul resides. The sword will consume the soul of Surtr and you will absorb both blade and soul. From it, winds of fire will scatter the battlefield and your body will arise from the middle. In this new form, your body is clad in the black scales of Surtr as armor, but beneath it is a raging fire. Your Al-Vaepni is heated by the lava texture underneath your body, melting it against your body like molten slag. Your Vaerne transforms back into stilled metal when you're not in motion. And then, with any motion, the crusted parts crack to reveal your burning core.
